Air for Strings
A passionate love-song for string orchestra, this 9 minute work has become a regular favourite on Classic FM’s popular evening show “Smooth CLassics”. It has been recorded twice: by Gavin Sutherland and the Royal Ballet Sinfonia, and Gavin Carr and Bath Philharmonia.
The Unusual Quietness of Snow
This is the slow movement of my Oboe Concerto which was written for Nicholas Daniel and premièred by him at the English Music Festival in 2008. It has been recorded on the Dutton Label by the Royal Ballet Sinfonia, conducted by Gavin Sutherland. This movement is an expression of sadness and loss and of love, at the time of my mother’s death. It’s also published as a separate piece in a version for oboe and string quartet.
Oboe Concerto
The 3rd movement of the Oboe Concerto - an expression of Summer’s fading warmth, composed on the beautiful island of Mallorca where I was living at the time. Here recorded by Nicholas Daniel, with the Royal Ballet Sinfonia, conducted by Gavin Sutherland.
Requiem For An Angel.
Composed in dedication to my mother following her death in 2005, Requiem for an Angel has since gone on to become my most performed work, with over 40 performances to date. In 2011 we recoded it on Stone Records, with Sophie Bevan (soprano), Mark Stone (baritone), Chorus Angelorum and Bath Philharmonia, conducted by my brother, Gavin Carr. The recording was launched by Classic Fm which took it to a much wider audience, resulting in its current popularity and performances by choral societies around the globe.
Holding The Stars
The 2nd part of my Three Motets for unaccompanied SATB choir: an evocation to my own words of a summer’s night, wandering alone and lost in thought under a star lit sky.
Cloths of Heaven
The 3rd part of my Three Motets for unaccompanied SATB choir - a setting of the popular Yeats poem, originally commissioned by Christopher Theobald while still a student at school in Norfolk, and here recorded by Chorus Angelorum, conducted by my brother Gavin.
Seven Last Words from the Cross
This work was commissioned by Bath Minerva choir and premiered in Bath Abbey; it received a standing ovation that will live for me always, for to see the emotional impact this work had on the audience was quite something for me as the composer to witness. It has since had quite a few performances both in the UK and in America where it has been presented 3 times on Good Friday. It is recorded on Stone Records, with William Dazeley (baritone), Chorus Angelorum, and Bath Philharmonia conducted by Gavin Carr.
